Making Mars

After watching the Martian, those gorgeous pans across the Martian landscape made me fall in love with our celestial neighbor. So much so I wanted a little hunk of it for myself.
Thankfully NASA provides 3D models of Mars, and the Moon, a library of their greatest hits, if you will, right here.
I downloaded an .stl if one of their Martian scans (this one is of the Curiosity landing site) and printed it out.
The only thing missing was that gorgeous color. So after a trip to the art supply store I game back with some gold and iron powder, some water based sizing, and a little wood stain to add some depth.
And now I have a mini martian vista of my very own.
